1. Can you introduce yourself and DHL Designs?
DLH Designs is an artisanal concrete company owned and operated by myself Bec and my husband David.
We specialise in handmade concrete basins but also make custom concrete bench tops, vanities, hearths and other architectural elements.
2. How was DHL Designs born? How did you start?
We began as a hobby! David had worked in engineering and project management for 20 years, so when I asked him to b build a wood-fired pizza oven on a polished concrete bench top for our home he was up to the challenge. It looked so amazing I asked him to build a concrete hearth, then an outdoor kitchen. Before long our friends were requesting bench tops and other items so it became a business. Once we received a request for concrete basins we realised how much we loved making these and that we would like to make basins our core business.
3. What makes DHL Designs different? Can you explain your products with details?
DLH Designs’ basins are designed from concept through to finished product in our workshop. Concrete basins can sometimes get a bad rap as they can be rather flat-bottomed due to difficulties in design and manufacture. This means that they don’t drain well and water, soap scum, toothpaste etc sits in the bottom of the basin. We make sure every DLH Designs’ basin drains efficiently. This is not only importantly asthetically but also important to the longevity of the basin as concrete basins are sealed, not fired like ceramic or porcelain. We also think it is important to retain concrete’s beautiful, textural feel so while the interior of our basins are smooth and easy to look after, the outside retains the natural movement and pinholes that are characteristic to concrete.
Our basins are handcrafted in our workshop in country Victoria, Australia and can be shipped all over the world. They are available in 17 beautiful colours from your typical greys through to pink, mint green and blue. Colour samples are available to order through our shop with the cost fully redeemable when you order a basin.
4. What reactions do you get from your clients? Do they love your products?
With our basins it seems to be love at first sight. While concrete basins are not for everyone, the people who love them love them fiercely! Once our clients decide on a DLH Designs basin they don’t accept anything else. We constantly have people saying to us “OMG I love your beautiful basins!”. Our client’s also appreciate the artisanal, handcrafted and unique quality of our basins. I think there is a real push to support small business at the moment and we are grateful to be in that space.
5. What are the advantages of DHL Designs?
We are a small business that takes an enormous amount of pride in what we do. Every basin is made by David and myself, we pack every basin for shipping ourselves and every email, phone call and message is answered by us. We want our basins to be enjoyed for many years and they are designed carefully with longevity, as well as beauty in mind.
