1. Can you introduce yourself and EDYA1929?
My name is Yumi Christina Sakamoto, Founder/Designer of EDYA1929. I am Japanese-Filipino descent and was bi-culturally raised in the Philippines and Japan. Back and forth between different countries inspired me in many ways.Over the years, I worked in the major fashion industry while I lived in Tokyo Japan. Handling the designs after another as an industrial fashion designer, I eventually grew out of the corporate world, and sought the fashion spirit that truly convinced myself.
As founder/designer of EDYA1929, I create modern and universal fashion items with the fabric taken from vintage Japanese Kimonos.
Unfortunately, kimono is not everyday clothing for Japanese women anymore. I bring back those once-forgotten Kimonos to the modern world with the essence of Filipino culture essence. Brand name EDYA1929 is from my great-grandfather’s business “EDOYA” which was established in 1929. I named it on my brand to pay respect to my ancestors.
2. How was EDYA1929 born? How did you start?
In 2019, I found a lone kimono in the small town of Luzon Island, Philippines. it was the year when I came back to the Philippines after 13 years of city life in Tokyo, Japan. This Kimono was not in the best condition; however, it was amazingly beautiful and had a sense of refinement.
It made me realize the beauty, embracement and pride of the tradition that will never fade. This experience re-open my eyes and started my journey to know the people and culture through creating fashion pieces with kimono. Then, EDYA1929 was born.
3. What makes EDYA1929 different? Can you explain your products with details?
Originally inspired by my Philippine-Japanese heritage, our collections are both bold and elegant while tying in various cultural influences. and We use only exquisite fabric taken from vintage kimonos as main materials, all the while since we started the brand.
These are the elements that make EDYA1929 one and only. Kimono has a beauty and nobleness that opens your eyes. Each kimono has its unique printed designs. When we create the piece, we retain the original design of kimono as much as possible. The technique and knowledge of pattern making, and design are absolutely necessary in this process. Together with local artisans in the Philippines, the pieces from EDYA1929 are meticulously made with the respect and love to Kimono culture.
4. What reactions do you get from your clients? Do they love your products?
Our clients love our product! We accept the custom/made-to-order for special occasions like resort vacation, party…and etc. I am so glad that our dresses are chosen to be worn on special days.

We are proud that we have spirit in environmental respect. Since we use the vintage fabric from Kimono, we do not do the mass production. There is still a lot to work on however, we continue to improve all aspects of our business to minimize the impact on the environment.
