1. Can you introduce yourself and Mala Rock Shop?
My name is Alex Capellan, I run Mala Inc., a company based in Mexico City. We have two stores, one in Mexico City called MalaRacha.com for Mexican market, and other one, MalaRockShop.com selling to the US and Europe. We offer rock songs inspired t-shirts for music lovers. Also, our catalogue has t-shirts for musicians and home decor. Nevertheless, the t-shirts are our main business.
2. How was Mala Rock Shop born? How did you start?
I am a musician and true music lover from Mexico City. I played in several bands through high school and college. Every time an international rock band came to Mexico I was the person who walk through the people all the way up to the front of the stage. I memorized all lyrics just to sing them along. After every concert I always noticed that most of the t-shirts designs were the same. And as a real concert fan, I was always trying to show off that I went to every concert but I didn’t want to have the same t-shirt that everybody else has. I had this problem since I was 16 but it was until 2016 (on my late 20’s) that I started to plan a business where the t-shirts weren’t about the band or the latest album of the band, but about the songs and music. After all, we fall in love of a band because of their music.
At the beginning I started Mala Racha as a side hustle while working as a freelance doing digital marketing. With my experience selling online almost everything you can imagine, I decided to start selling my own designs though some online market places. After one year we launched our web page in Mexico and in 2020 we launched Mala Rock for the American and European markets.
3. What makes Mala Rock Shop different? Can you explain your products with details?
We are music lovers creating designs for music lovers. We want our designs to express the emotions of the songs we love so much. We make a whole plan for each design just to make sure it does capture the essence of each song. Every marketing effort always try to make people believe in our brand, not only because we have some badass designs, but because we know about music. For example, we are working in some marketing efforts to give away some free stuff but very valuable for our clients like wallpapers, stickers and even Spotify playlists.
At the end, you can find plenty of t-shirts with your favorite band’s logo, there are so many sellers out there with the same designs. But t-shirts about the songs you love the most? That’s hard to find.
4. What reactions do you get from your clients? Do they love your products?
Yes they do! For Mala Rock, our customers are mostly grown-up adults, in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s, and they do appreciate the nostalgia that our products bring. One of the most common review is from customers telling how our t-shirts make them remind some relative who passed away and really loved that song. I think that’s the real magic of our while we are only trying to honor the music that we love, at the same time every person has a different story with those songs and that’s why our products have so many positive reviews.
5. What are the advantages of Mala Rock Shop?
We are always trying to offer the best customer service for our shoppers. We always think as customers before selling anything. Before launching a new design we ask ourselves: “Does this design really has the underlying essence of the song?”. And for every step in the customer journey we have the same process. For instance, we have a very flexible return policy. We believe that our clients are expecting something extremely beautiful in exchange for their money, so if the product is not what they expected, we gladly accept exchanges, returns or we offer refunds.
